Corporal Samuel John Wylie

 

Samuel John Wylie was born on 3 December 1887 at Killee, Lisbellaw, County Fermanagh, son of farmer Samuel John Wylie and his wife Mary Jane (nee Bracken).

He enlisted in the North of Ireland Imperial Yeomanry between 1903 and 1908, transferring to the North Irish Horse (No.74 – later Corps of Hussars No.71005) on its formation on 6 July 1908.

Wylie embarked for France on 20 August 1914 with C Squadron, seeing action in the retreat from Mons and advance to the Aisne.

In April 1917 he was awarded a Special Reserve Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.

Wylie was transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve, on 13 February 1919.

 

Wylie's brother, Corporal James Thomas Wylie, also served in the war in the North Irish Horse. One of the two brothers is pictured here. He may also have been a cousin of North Irish Horsemen Robert Alexander Wylie and William James Wylie, from Cloghtogle, Lisbellaw.
